CLEARWATER – The Board of County Commissioners opened and ended its Feb. 20 meeting with a moment of silence to show concern for Gary Vickers, director of Pinellas County emergency management.

Vickers remains in the intensive care unit at Bayfront Medical Center recovering from multiple fractures suffered during a Feb. 13 car accident.

According to a press release from the county’s Communications Department, Vickers was alone in a personal car about 10:25 p.m. when he veered off the road and ran into a tree on Countryside Boulevard, just south of State Road 580.

Vickers has a broken clavicle, sternum and rib and his heart is bruised. He also fractured his cervical spine and has a cervical collar, according to Mary Burrell, county communications specialist.

“There is no nerve damage, no loss of feeling or movement and no surgery expected,” Burrell said. “He basically needs to mend. He was a very lucky man.”

Burrell said she was told that the accident was not alcohol related. She said that Vickers is diabetic, and investigators believe his medical condition may have contributed to the crash.

Vickers, 53, of Clearwater, has served the residents of Pinellas for the past five years as director of the county’s emergency management department and is well-known for his expertise during hurricane season.

While Vickers is in ICU he can't have flowers, balloons or cards. People are being asked to hold off on sending anything until he is transferred, Burrell said.

“He is well aware of the public's good wishes and his colleagues' concern,” she said.
