Fall by Victoria Block
LARGO - The Gulf Coast Museum of Art is hosting an exhibition of work by artist Victoria Block from Aug. 9 through Sept. 27, 2008. An opening reception is scheduled on Friday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m.

Victoria Block: Narrations features the artist's luminous, large-scale works that envelop the viewer in richly painted and vibrant landscapes—fleeting moments captured on canvas, though abstracted from any direct reference to time or place. Block’s impressionistic depictions of vast fields and lush gardens, often blanketed in atmospheric haze, draw upon the artist’s memories.

Block incorporates ceramic vessels, books and other forms she creates into the viewer’s experience of her installations. Equally rich in color and design, her ceramics are textured with impressions of collected objects and appear reminiscent of archeological findings. These smaller creations, set against her canvases, encourage interplay between the media.

Residing in Montreal, Canada, with winters along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Block has found inspiration in her diverse surroundings. Her landscapes, while most are painted near her Canadian home, were often inspired by her experiences in the South and depict no specific location. Rather they appeal to a more universal experience of the ephemeral landscape in which we all have once lingered.

The museum is located at 12211 Walsingham Road in Largo. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $8 adults; $7 seniors 65 and older; $4 for students with valid ID and youth ages 7 to 18. Free for museum members and children under age 6.
