Author Sharilynn LaMay is a semi-finalist in the 2008 Florida Playwrights Festival. Her two-act farce revolves around bank robbers, a boarding house, a psychic and missing money. Wacky, zany and lots of fun. Veteran community theater director Abbott Morgan and nine motivated and talented cast members have provided the Florida Playwrights Festival with a zany and wacky play, on a par with "You Can't Take it With You" and "Noises Off!"
According to Morgan, "LaMay's approach to comedy is fresh, direct and unburdened by political or social agenda - it's just funny!"
And the laughs come fast as the eccentric female residents of Flo Bird's Boarding House try to out-fox two not-too-bright bank robbers from getting away with the million dollars they just stole. But, who, indeed, has the money and what do they plan to do with the purloined booty? Will anyone discover if crime really pays?
The final stages of the Florida Playwrights Festival competition are being presented during August. In this inaugural year, the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center and Gulfport Community Players are producing the two of the semi-finalists in this year's competition.
Festival director Victor Carr received scripts from all over the state — from as far away as Miami and as near as Largo. The festival gives playwrights an opportunity to have their plays read, staged and produced in an adjudicated competition for “Best Play for 2008.”
The winner of the 2008 competition will have a DVD of their play sent to six theater companies in New York City that have agreed to consider including it in an upcoming season. This is a unique opportunity for a Florida playwright that is only offered through this festival.
The show stars Annette Delligatti, Laurie Gibellino, Linda Hamrell, Angy Hayes, Lorus Hawbecker, George Lynch, Patricia Mahan, Angela Sarabia, and Bryan Sarabia. Costumes are by Helen Campbell, sets by George Miller, and direction by Abbott Morgan.
