American Stage begins new after hours series
Article published on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008
ST. PETERSBURG – American Stage Theatre Company begins a new experiment this September, producing edgier shows after its Mainstage plays have finished for the night.

The first play performed as part of this “after hours” programming will be Eve Ensler’s "The Vagina Monologues," running Sept. 23 through Oct. 12. Tickets are “pay-what-you-can” with part of the proceeds going to the local YWCA’s efforts to help teenage mothers.

Show times are 10:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Sunday.

To assist with this special event, American Stage is looking for local female celebrities willing to go on stage and “read” a role during each performance. Those interested should e-mail Todd Olson at candtolson@aol.com.

The show consists of up close and personal staged reading abot such topics as listing pet names for private parts, telling stories about discovering “down there,” and sounding-off about orgasms.

“We are excited about opening our ‘After Hours’ series with as remarkable a piece as "The Vagina Monologues,” said Olson, American Stage’s producing artistic director. “After the outpouring of support for the recent late night performances of "An Evening Wasted with the Music of Tom Lehrer," which was co-produced with Economic Stimulus Productions, we wanted to fill the needs of our patrons who are craving after hours theatre.”

Drinks and food will be allowed into the seating area. Special show themed alcoholic beverages will be offered for sale, as well as the theatre’s usual open bar.

For more information, call the box office at 727-823-PLAY (7529) or visit www.americanstage.org.

American Stage Theatre Company is located at 211 Third St. S. in St. Petersburg.
