Wal-Mart employee praised for compassion
Article published on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008
Editor:
On July 7, 2008, I was at the Wal-Mart in Pinellas Park on U.S. 19.

When I went in the store there were no cars in front of mine. I came out an hour or so later to find a kitten, less than 6 weeks old, brutally tortured and killed 4 feet or so from the front of my car. I walked over to see if I could rescue him, but he was gone. It was a tortuous and horrendous death. Whoever did this to him did so not with a car but with their hands and a weapon.

He was so little . . . how could anyone be so evil to do this to him? Why couldn’t they have just taken him inside of Wal-Mart or to the SPCA? There is nothing he could have done to deserve that horrific death.

I went into Wal-Mart, the horror still on my face, and choked up. They sent Alan out with me to take care of him. I never met Alan before. He came out with a bag and gloves. As we were walking to the little guy, cars were coming close to running him over. I had to point and Alan spoke the words to tell them to get away.

Alan is a cashier at Wal-Mart. He was very respectful and kind in the care with which he gently picked up this tiny little kitten. He agreed with me that this was not a car, but a death done by human and evil hands. Alan promised me he would call Pet Angel, a local funeral home for four-pawed creatures, the next day. He stayed outside with me and took extra time to let me know he’d take care of him the best he could and reassured me he understood and felt the same way I did.

In my life I will never forget this. I will never forget Alan (Wal-Mart does not reveal employees last names – which I agree with), his kind heart, his gentle soul that even in facing death, he displayed respect for a little kitten who could no longer feel his gentle touch.
