Madeira Beach committee to make plans for Snack Shack
Article published on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008
MADEIRA BEACH – A committee will be formed to come up with ideas and plans for use of the Snack Shack cabin at Archibald Park and also look at park improvements.

Citizens interested in joining the group should pick up an application at City Hall or check the city Web site.

The commission agreed at an Aug. 5 workshop to spend $121,000 on improvements to Archibald Park, including $60,000 to bring the cabin up to code requirements.

Public Services Director Michael Maxemow said the project could be put out for bids within two weeks.

“We will have a building up to code, and then decide what we want to do with it,” he said.

Renovation of the Snack Shack cabin was overwhelmingly approved in a referendum vote this spring.

Citizens can donate to 9/11 memorial

The city will accept donations from citizens to purchase engraved bricks on behalf of Madeira Beach for a 9/11 memorial being constructed in Redington Beach.

A proposal by Commissioner Steve Kochick to donate $250 in city funds to the memorial was modified after Commissioner Sarah Nichols said the donation would have no benefit to the people of the city.

“The memorial is a great place for individuals to put charitable funds but I don’t think it is a place for the city to use tax dollars,” she said.

Instead of donating $250 outright, the city will accept contributions from citizens and make up the difference, if necessary.

If more than $250 is collected, the surplus will be added to the memorial donation. The citizen collection idea was proposed by former Commissioner Martha Boos.

Citizens who want to donate to the memorial should contact City Hall. Contributors also may submit ideas for the engraving on the bricks. The best ideas will be used.

City seeks new logo

Local artists are being asked to help design a new logo for the city.

Commissioner Terry Lister said the logo would supplement the city seal and be used on municipal vehicles and other places throughout the city.

Creator of the winning logo will be given $100 plus public recognition.

Interested parties should contact city hall at 391-9951.
