Tom Hafner, president of the Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach, left, welcomes PSF&RD’s Rick Walker to the Rotary meeting.
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – Rick Walker, assistant operations chief for the Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue District, discussed Pinellas County emergency preparedness, emphasizing hurricane preparedness, at the Aug. 5 Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach.

Walker pointed out that 40 percent of all small businesses do not reopen following a major disaster. While there are many reasons, not having a disaster plan for a small business can cause significant difficulty.

All small businesses should maintain offsite backups of all critical data including financial and bookkeeping information, customer and vendor lists and any other information necessary for the continuation of the business after a disaster.

It also was recommended that companies consider lining up back-up vendors in case the primary vendor is also impacted by the event.
