CLEARWATER – Three men who live in Largo were on their way to do a home invasion, police say, but instead found their way to jail.
The investigative arm of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office heard that an armed home invasion robbery was in the planning stages. Detectives, acting on information from a confidential source, watched as the three men scoped out the residence a few days before the invasion.
On Oct. 22, the day the three men planned to commit the robbery, detectives were on their tail. They were on their way to the robbery, police say, when authorities made a traffic stop near the targeted home, which is in the Morningside area.
The men were riding in a gold 2000 Ford Expedition. Inside the vehicle, authorities found a number of items that were to be used in the home invasion, including ski masks, a pry bar and other tools to pull off the heist.
The men were arrested without incident, police say and charged with one count of conspiracy to commit home invasion robbery.
Richard Lee Long, 38, Reginald Landrick McRae, 40 and Phillip Robert Welch, 24 face charges in connection with the incident.
More charges are pending. Authorities are looking into whether the individuals were connected with any other home invasion. The public is asked to contact authorities at 582-6200 or to remain anonymous, 1-800-873-TIPS.
