Time to replace smoke detector batteries
CLEARWATER – Daylight-saving time ends this Sunday, Nov. 4, and Clearwater firefighters say it’s a good time to replace the batteries in smoke detectors.
People who need smoke detectors can get them free, and get free help installing them, by calling the Fire Prevention Office at 562-4327.
“Having smoke alarms in your home is important,” said Clearwater Fire Marshal Steve Strong. “You should have a minimum of one smoke alarm on every floor of your home and within 15 feet of sleeping areas. If the door to sleeping areas is kept closed, a smoke alarm should be placed inside that room as well.”
New library hours
CLEARWATER – Due to budget cuts, the hours of Clearwater’s libraries have been changed.
The Main, East and Countryside libraries will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The North Greenwood Branch will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Clearwater Beach Branch will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Vietnam-era SWAT weapons retired
CLEARWATER – In 1980, Cole’s Gun Shop of Dunedin donated two fully automatic M-16 assault rifles to Clearwater’s police SWAT Team. But the Vietnam-era military weapons were not really needed.
“The SWAT Team has not utilized the weapons for over 15 years and does not foresee a future need,” a recent police memo to the City Council said.
So Cole’s has agreed to take back the M-16s and replace them with five semi-automatic AR-10 rifles with bipods, accessory rails and telescopic sights, at no cost. The federal government, which monitors transactions involving automatic weapons, has approved the swap.
“That’s a nice donation,” said Mayor Frank Hibbard.
