Largo, county libraries planning new computer interface LARGO – Largo Public Library patrons will have easier access to materials in other libraries through a new computer system to be enacted in August, according to library Director Casey McPhee.
The Largo facility is currently linked to other libraries in Pinellas County through a system called Sunline provided by the Tampa Bay Library Consortium. A new Internet system being adopted by the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative, McPhee said, will offer “improved customer service, streamlined work procedures and consistency among the libraries.”
Monster art proposed for city library LARGO – The City Commission has given its blessings to a regional art group’s plan to hang a giant mural of some kind in the central tower of the Largo Public Library.
The Greater Largo Library Foundation and the Outdoor Arts Foundation will pay for creation of the artwork, according to the Outdoor Arts Director Jay Gould. He said the city would be allowed to display the art for two years when it would be replaced by some other similar piece by the regional organization.
Gould assured commissioners that the elected officials would have final say over the art to be hung in the library. He said his organization is hoping to have a local artist create an abstract mural similar to the popular works of artist Alexander Calder.
Deaf ears turned to free handicapped parking LARGO – City commissioners ignored the pleas last week of Mayor Pat Gerard to make handicapped parking free at all city-sponsored events.
Gerard argued she felt the handicapped should not be penalized because of their afflictions that force them to ignore free parking available at the events. Parks, Recreation and Arts Director Joan Byrne said the $5 parking fee is only charged at some events and is used to help defray the cost of renting buses to move people from outlying parking lots.
Byrne said that there is usually one lot made available only to handicapped patrons with state-issued parking tags. She said this lot holds more than 100 vehicles and is the closest lot to the Cultural Center and the “great lawn.”
Gerard said she wanted to exempt those with the official tags from having to pay to park. But her suggestion gained no support from the elected officials nor from the Parks Advisory Board, which voted unanimously to continue the fee charged only at three major events: Halloween Spooktacular, Holiday Stroll and July Fourth.
