LARGO – The Largo Police Department Communications Center will be celebrating the week of April 13-19 as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.
The event honors police personnel who handle several thousand phone calls each month.
“Every day the citizens of Largo and Pinellas County depend on the skill, expertise, and commitment of the men and women who work in the communications center,” said Lt. Mike Loux, public information officer. “These individuals help save countless lives by responding to emergency calls, dispatching emergency professionals, and providing moral support to citizens in distress.”
Police personnel in 2007 answered 16,609 911 calls and another 243,132 administrative calls. They also dispatched 83,282 calls for service.
The Largo center employs 23 telecommunicators, 3 supervisors, and 1 manager. The length of service ranges from 1 month to 23 years.
“We are extremely proud of the group of professionals and gladly recognize them during their special week,” Loux said.
National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, sponsored by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International, honors the thousands of men and women who respond to emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to the world's citizens.
