Pow Wow likely to stay a three-day event

SEMINOLE – Organizers of the city’s annual Pow Wow Festival say the 2008 edition went so well, it will likely remain a three-day event.
In past years, the event was held over two weekend days in March at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex. It was expanded to three days this year as part of the event’s 40th anniversary celebration. Despite a rainout on opening night, the event still attracted between 12,000 and 15,000 patrons, said Recreation Director Jim Sheets.
“We just had our final committee meeting and everybody is very pleased with how it turned out,” said Sheets. “It made budgeted numbers, including projected revenue and profit. Right now, we’re very inclined to have a three-day festival next year on March 13-15. It seems to be very popular.”
Sheets said plans are to bring back local food vendors and use some of the features that made the 2008 event so successful.
Those include a 5K distance run and a firetruck pull.
“I think we’ll also have the fireworks (Saturday night) a little earlier to accommodate families with small children,” Sheets said.
Planning for the 2009 Pow Wow will begin in August with the first meeting of the 20-member organizational committee.
“Pow Wow is our biggest fundraiser and helps us to fund other programs that we put on,” said Sheets.
Among those are Winterfest, the Kids Triathlon, Freaky Fridays and Music in the Park.
